Signal Partners with Microsoft to Bring End-to-End Encryption to Skype

Despite its 300 million monthly active users and its large "prosumer" base, Skype remains one of the few modern messaging apps that doesn't encrypt your communications.

The new service, called Skype Private Conversations, will allow users to encrypt audio calls and text messages along with any images, audio or video files sent via Skype's text messaging feature. The feature is not supported in group chats.

Skype Insiders can navigate to the Compose menu and select "New Private Conversation" to get started. The Microsoft-owned service has partnered up with Signal in order to enable the new functionality, which is optional and not default for every chat. Once the contact accepts your invite, the Private Conversation will be available to you only on that specific device. If you'd like to move the conversation to a different device, you would need to resend the invitation to your contact. Once the conversation or message chain begins, it will remain end-to-end encrypted until it is ended, the post said.

Through the collaboration, Microsoft is introducing a private conversations feature in Skype, which is powered by the Signal protocol. Now these conversations are limited to two people at a time.

Currently, only Skype Insiders are able to try out Private Conversations for themselves.

The encrypted communication channel works for both audio and text messages and files as well but not video calls.
