US ambassador to Panama resigns, says cannot serve Trump

Feeley, who has served as the United States' top diplomat in Panama since January 15, 2016, will not officially leave his role until March 9, but the State Department confirmed his upcoming departure Friday, saying that the ambassador is retiring for "personal reasons".

The Department of State confirmed the departure of John D. Feeley, a career diplomat and former Navy helicopter pilot, stating that the ambassador made a decision to retire for personal reasons.

The US ambassador to Panama has reportedly resigned from his post saying he could no longer serve under his administration. But 320 days have elapsed since the start of the Trump administration and acting officials in the State Department are starting to hit that limit, making presidential nominations more important than ever.

Feeley's career included serving as the No. 2 official in the State Department bureau that deals with Latin America, as deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Mexico City and as director for Central American affairs in Washington.

While some have speculated that Feeley's decision was influenced by Trump's comments, a senior State Department official separately told Newsweek that was not the case.

Some of Trump's policies have been widely regarded within the region as hostile to Latin America.
