Airbus halts some deliveries, tests after engine snag

Airbus halts some deliveries, tests after engine snag

P&W clarifies that the preliminary finding indicates the problem is with the knife edge seal on the modified aft hub of the high pressure compressor.

This is the second problem affecting Pratt & Whitney GTF engines since the start of their marketing, the first causing delays in 2017 in delivery of the A320neo, the re-engined version of Airbus' single-aisle plane.

The issue is the latest in a string of problems that have bedeviled the GTF program.

Since the entry of A320neo into service more than two years ago, Pratt also has had to replace engines more frequently due to component failures. Affected PW1100G variants include: the PW1127G-JM, PW1127GA-JM, PW1130G-JM, PW1133G-JM, and PW1133GA-JM engines having Engine Serial Number (ESN) P770450 or subsequent.

In total, the grounding affects 15-20 recently delivered aircraft, the sources familiar with the matter said.

"This problem is isolated and limited", assured Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of the USA industrial conglomerate United Technologies.

Liberal outrage as Dems ignore 'dreamers' in budget deal
Ryan insisted he's committed to bringing an immigration bill to the floor, but said it must be one that President Trump will sign. Pelosi is taking a stand as Congress faces pressure to agree to a new budget deal that will avert another government shutdown .

Issued on Friday, February 9, the EAD said the measure was necessary after several A320neo Family jets reported In-Flight engine Shut-Downs (IFSD) and Rejected Take-Off (RTO) events.

The agency had ordered flight restrictions on planes powered by the engines. Both A320neos and A321neos are affected.

In a statement issued on Saturday, IndiGo confirmed that there are some issues with the engine of the said aircraft and keeping the safety as top priority, it has decided not to fly these three aircrafts. Secondly, it has said that if an aircraft with at least one affected engine has operated one flight cycle after the directive was issued, it should not be allowed to conduct ETOPS operations.

Neither the aircraft manufacturer nor the agency disclosed what airlines are operating aircraft with affected engines.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviationofficial said IndiGo has three such aircraft, which have been grounded. "As a precaution, aircraft with these engines will be addressed in a manner consistent with the operational instructions issued by Airbus, and coordinated between Airbus and Pratt & Whitney as needed".
