Apple confirms iPhone source code leak

Apple confirms iPhone source code leak

Motherboard reports that "the biggest leak in history" occurred when an unknown user uploaded bits of the iOS 9 code, called the iBoot, onto Github, opening doors for hackers and others to catch a glimpse of the phone's software.

Apple has now confirmed the code was real, but said the incident would not affect the security of its devices as it did not rely on secrecy around code to protect its devices. Further, the company also issued a DMCA takedown for the code.

Apple keeps code like this firmly under lock and key, in a form of 'security through obscurity', as it is essential to the core functionality of iOS. There are no details on how ZioShiba got the iBoot source code, but after seeing it, we're certain it's the real deal.

However, talking to BBC, Cyber-security expert Prof Alan Woodward said that security researchers and hackers will study the code to see whether there are any flaws in it that could lead to unauthorised access to the smartphones. However, multiple copies of the code have already spread online. This has made the software development platform to remove the controversial iOS source code though enough damage could have already been done. It ensures that the mobile OS's kernel is approved by Apple and legitimate for use on an iPhone or iPad.

Pellegrino says no-one should hold Van Dijk, or indeed any other player, responsible for the hefty transfer fees of the modern game.

Apple security is multi-layered, but users should still update to the latest possible version of iOS to make sure they're protected. Before the iBoot leak, ZioShiba had been inactive on GitHub for at least seven months. However, the original leak was found to be associated with iOS 9, which is a few generations removed from the currently-available iOS 11. This is not the first time the iOS source code has been leaked online.

According to Gizmodo, that same bit of code has been circulating the web since late past year, when a user uploaded it on Reddit. While Apple has said that the leak is essentially nothing for users to be concerned about, it makes one wonder whether Apple's ecosystem is as roughly locked down as once thought.

But leaks of this kind potentially open up the scope for iPhone hacking and no doubt a degree of furore will be churning away in communities that love nothing more than getting stuck into a piece of private code.
