Civilian Victims Of Afghan War Exceed 10000 In 2017

"The chilling statistics provide credible data about the war's impact, but the figures alone can not capture the appalling human suffering inflicted on ordinary people, especially women and children", UNAMA chief Tadamichi Yamamoto said.

The armed conflict a year ago caused a total of 10,453 civilian casualties, including 3,438 deaths, according to the annual report by the U.N Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, released Thursday.

U.S. President Donald Trump under his new Afghan war strategy has instructed military commanders to step up ground and air operations against the Taliban to force them to come to the negotiating table.

"Attacks where anti-government elements deliberately targeted civilians accounted for 27 percent of the total civilian casualties.mainly from suicide and complex attacks", the United Nations said in a statement, in reference to the Taliban, ISIS and other factions.

But the total number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan last year decreased by nearly a tenth, or nine percent, compared to the year before.

Yamamoto, who also heads UNAMA, expressed deep concern at the increased harm to civilians caused by suicide attacks: "I am particularly appalled by the continued indiscriminate and unlawful use of IEDs, such as suicide bombs and pressure-plate devices in civilian populated areas".

The UN says terrorist attacks in major cities by the Islamic State militants were behind the rise.

Aerial operations conducted by the Afghan military and the global forces operating in the country, including the United States, accounted for six percent of all of the civilian casualties in Afghanistan past year.

On Wednesday, the European Central Bank also announced the cities that will host the new eight-team Twenty20 tournament in 2020. Hosting an Ashes Test has been a long-time dream of Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire's chairman.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, called for the "perpetrators to be held accountable".

But terror attacks continue this year.

The deadliest attack since the United Nations mission began recording civilian casualties in 2009 was in Kabul on May 31 when a suicide attacker detonated a truck bomb, killing 92 civilians and injuring 491.

"Such attacks are prohibited under global humanitarian law and are likely, in most cases, to constitute war crimes". The US is the only global force known to be carrying out airstrikes in Afghanistan.

The 2017 Annual Report on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict in Afghanistan documented 10,453 civilian casualties, including 3,438 deaths and 7,015 wounded, in 2017.

Women and children were heavily affected by the violence with 359 women killed last year, an increase of 5 percent over the previous year - and 865 injured.

The UNAMA also noted that the number of airstrikes carried out by worldwide military forces and the Afghan air force grew significantly in 2017 which had an impact on the number of casualties.

Although casualties among children decreased by 10 per cent to 861 dead and 2,318 injured, casualties among children still account for 30 per cent of all civilian casualties throughout the year.
