Froome vows to race on, despite probe

Froome vows to race on, despite probe

The Team Sky rider and his team, insist he has done nothing wrong, and have said he will continue with a full racing programme, which will include May's Tour of Italy and the Tour de France in July.

Chris Froome says he is prepared to race the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France even if the investigation into his adverse drugs test is unresolved.

Despite the criticism, Froome, who has not raced since September, is preparing to start his 2018 season in the same country where he returned the controversial test on September 7 as he headed for victory in the Spanish Vuelta.

Chris Froome promised to prove his innocence as he spoke in public today for the first time since it was revealed that he had returned an adverse finding in a drug test conducted previous year.

"Let's hope it doesn't come to that but I'm still allowed to race now and I don't see why not", Froome said.

Chris Froome talks to the media prior to the first stage of the Ruta del Sol in southern Spain. The stage was won by Frenchman Thomas Boudat, a former omnium world champion on the track.

Roger Federer teases French Open appearance
I thought that by not winning the World Tour Finals that the No1 was never going to happen again, or was going to be out of sight. Federer lies just 155 points behind the injured Nadal, with a possible 180 points available for making the last-four here.

Speaking outside the Team Sky bus on Wednesday, Froome said he had received "so much support" from other riders and thanked them for reaching out during a "difficult period". "It was great to catch up and wonderful to see the support".

"It's been a hard period now". Asked if he could gauge the mood of the fans on the roadside during the stage, Froome said: "I always enjoy racing in Spain, it's a great atmosphere here again".

Froome, who won the race on his last appearance in 2015, should be one of the favorites over a course which contains a mountain-top finish on Thursday and ends in a time trial that could have been designed for the 32-year old Briton. "We'll see how he gets on during the race but I think he'll be fine".

There is no mandatory ban in this type of case and riders usually respond in private, but UCI president David Lappartient has said Team Sky should suspend Froome until the case is resolved.

On the other hand, if he is later banned then he would be retrospectively disqualified, meaning he could be distorting the competitive balance of the Ruta by riding.
