Global sea level surging at faster rate, says study

"For example, the Tampa Bay area has been identified as one of 10 most vulnerable areas in the world to sea level rise and the increasing rate of rise is of great concern".

For the study, the researchers looked at 25 years of satellite data and found that the sea level rise is not a hoax but it is actually happening and that to be at an alarming rate.

"That assumes that there is no rapid, dynamical change in the ice sheet", he said, referring to his projected rates of rising sea levels.

The study measured that the sea level rate is increasing by about 0.08 millimeters per year (mm/year). That's because the basis of this estimate does not factor in any huge, model-altering events in the near future-like the collapse of important ice sheets or the acceleration of ice melt at the poles-since that would introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the predictions.

Sea level rise, more than temperature, is a better gauge of climate change in action, said Anny Cazenave, director of Earth science at the International Space Science Institute in France, who edited the study.

The first of these was warmer water expanding, with this "thermal expansion" of the oceans having contributed around half of the 7cm global mean sea level rise over the last 25 years.

If the oceans continue to change at this rate, sea levels will rise 26 inches by the end of the century - enough to cause major problems for coastal cities, according to the study. "That's why I think that this is a conservative estimate, because it doesn't consider what if the ice sheets really start to go".

Nerem told InsideClimate News that the study is important because it relies completely on observational data.

The study informed that the melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctic are the main drivers of sea level rise.

The findings are "roughly in agreement with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report (AR5) model projections", said the report, based on 25 years of satellite data. Authorities from the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council are constantly observing how sea level rise could impact the region and are planning worst-case scenario projections. But detecting acceleration is challenging, even in such a long record. El Ninos and La Ninas (the opposing phases of the El Nino Southern Oscillation, or Enso) influence ocean temperature and global precipitation patterns. Disentangling the various causes of sea level changes allowed researchers to pinpoint the acceleration rate due to climate change alone, which is critical to illuminate what sea level changes will happen over a time period of several decades.

The team also used tide gauge data to assess potential errors in the altimeter estimate. They also used data from the GRACE satellite gravity mission to determine that the acceleration is largely being driven by melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica.

Further corrections were made using tide-gauge data collected on the coasts, to tweak and verify the readings provided by the satellites.
