Immigrant Rights Activist Ravi Ragbir Wins Stay After Being Targeted by ICE

The New York-based Immigrant Defense Project said the suit - Ragbir vs Homan - was filed in federal district court in the Southern District of New York "to challenge the recent targeting of immigrant rights activists by federal immigration officials".

The "You Can't Deport a Movement" rally was held in support of Ravi Ragbir and other immigration rights activists.

"Like so many people who are living in this country under the threat of deportation, I know how important it is to raise our voices against the injustices in the system", said Ragbir, who is married to an American immigration lawyer and whose daughter is American.

The suit comes a day before Immigration and Customs Enforcement had ordered Ragbir to report for deportation to his native Trinidad and ultimately seeks both to allow Ragbir to stay in the USA without fear of deportation and to restrain the government from targeting immigration activists.

Perdue said the lawsuit seeks injunctions preventing Ragbir's deportation and restraining the government from selectively enforcing immigration laws against those who speak out.

The ICE maintained that it is not targeting Ragbir for his politics. What's more, ICE sent him to a detention center more than. It adds: "The government can not silence critics of its immigration laws and policies by deporting them".

When Ramaphosa sold off his business in 2014 and returned to politics, he became one of South Africa's 20 richest people. According to ANC rules, all members, even elected officials, fulfil their functions according to the will of the party.

Protesters hailed the decision to grant Ragbir a temporary stay and called on legislature to preserve the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"We thought it was a shot in the dark", Ragbir said to his supporters today.

Ravi Ragbir, executive director of the immigrant advocacy group, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in January during a routine check-in with the agency.

A federal judge in New Jersey has extended Ragbir's stay until mid-March.

Ragbir hails from Trinidad and Tobego, and has been a USA permanent resident since 1994, but has fought a deportation order since 2000, after he served a 30-month prison term for wire fraud, which led the feds to revoke his residency. A permitted protest is still planned outside the ICE check-in office at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
