Iran Vows to Play Major Role in Iraq's Reconstruction

We maintain that participation of the global community in the reconstruction of Iraq is a necessary move in the right direction.

Housebuilding is the most urgent task for Iraq, said Raja Rehan Arshad, the lead disaster risk management specialist for the World Bank.

About $22 billion will be required in the short term and another $66 billion in the medium term, the director-general of the country's planning ministry, Qusay Adulfattah, told the conference, without indicating any timeframe. "We hope French expertise will be used for the reconstruction", Iraq's Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari replied.

Rebuilding homes, hospitals, schools, roads, businesses and telecommunications will be key to providing jobs for the young, ending the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and putting an end to decades of political and sectarian violence.

According to a report provided at the conference by the minister, the total damage in Iraq by anti-IS military operations amounted to 45.7 billion dollars, the most affected sectors in this country by the war against IS include housing sector, power, industry and commerce, oil and gas and transport.

About 2.5 million Iraqis remain displaced by the fighting, he added.

After a transition period, the government would end direct support after 2024, the newspaper said, citing NASA documents. Aeronautics giant Boeing now operates the station - which weighs roughly 460 tons - on behalf of NASA.

"If the worldwide community doesn't help the government of Iraq to stabilize these areas [devastated by the war] the gains against Daesh could be at risk", she said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

"This is an exciting and important time for Iraq", said TigerSwan's CEO Jim Reese."With the Iraqi forces leading the liberation of their country from ISIS, Iraq is in a great position to receive new investment from both the public and private sector. It is important that we come alongside the Iraqis to help them rebuild, maintain stability and grow their economy", Reese continued.

Baghdad has said it is determined to tackle the red tape and corruption that hamper investment.
