Iranian-Canadian professor lifeless in Iran: son

Iranian-Canadian professor lifeless in Iran: son

Ramin said his father's death "is impossible to fathom".

On his Instagram account, Raam Emami wrote that authorities said his father had committed suicide.

Kavous Seyed Emami, a 63-year-old sociology professor at Iran's Imam Sadegh University, has been confirmed dead just two weeks after his arrest.

The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), a non-profit group based in NY, said at least nine other staff members and executives of Seyed-Emami's organization had been arrested on the same day as him, citing a relative of one of those detained. "I still can't believe this", Raam Seyed-Emami said.

"They were gathering classified information in strategic areas. under the coverage of scientific and environmental projects", he said, without giving further information.

"He was one of the defendants in a spying case and unfortunately he committed suicide in prison since he knew that many had made confessions against him and because of his own confessions", Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi told the ILNA news agency. He sponsored Seyed-Emami when he came to the southern Alberta post-secondary institution on sabbatical from about August to mid-December of previous year.

Harrison met with Seyed-Emami on a number of occasions while he was in Alberta, and said that he, along with his wife and other colleagues, had the opportunity to dine at his house one night.

Canada's foreign office said it was aware of the reports of Emami's death.

The Iran Sociological Association, to which Seyed Emami belonged, questioned the government's official version of events.

The train movement on the section was finally restored at 2 am today, he said. Another elephant was seriously injured in the accident, he added.

Seyed-Emami was detained along with seven colleagues from the wildlife NGO on January 24.

Emami was reportedly held at Iran's notorious Evin prison.

"The information published about him is not believable and we expect officials to respond", it said in a statement.

The Iranian judiciary could not immediately be reached for comment on Saturday evening, Reuters reported.

Iranian lawmaker Ali Shakourirad, head of the reformist Islamic Union Party, called on justice officials in a tweet to be more transparent, saying that the death had "caused a wave of questions and concerns among the public".

Seyed-Emami presented a lecture to Lethbridge students in October, on ethnic identities and nationhood in Iran.

The Liberal government has said it wants to restore diplomatic relations, even after Iran arrested retired Canadian-Iranian professor Homa Hoodfar, who was after months in Evin prison.

Human rights groups outside the country have accused Iranian authorities of systematic abuses in prisons.
