Jayalalithaa's portrait unveiled in TN Assembly, DMK moves court for its removal

Jayalalithaa's portrait unveiled in TN Assembly, DMK moves court for its removal

A portrait of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was unveiled at the Legislative Assembly hall on Monday, amid boycott by the Opposition parties.

Palaniswami said steps are being taken to build a memorial for Jayalalithaa.

Though mistakes might have been committed by leaders whose portraits are displayed in the House, they were not convicted in any case, he pointed out.

"It could never have been the intention of the then speakers to hang portraits of convicts, culprits or persons convicted of offences involving moral turpitude like corruption", the petitioner said.

He alleged the government hurriedly organised the event on Monday morning, before the PIL filed by his party's MLA J Anbazhagan seeking to remove Jayalalithaa's portraits from government offices came up for hearing that day. "I wholeheartedly welcome the move to unveil Jayalalithaa's portrait". She is a mass leader and there is nothing wrong in honouring her.

"The firms and companies were operating from the residence of Jayalalithaa and it can not be accepted that she was unaware of the same even though she feigned ignorance about the activities carried on by Sasikala", the court has said of the companies in whose names properties were bought.

Jayaram Venkatesan, convenor of Arappor Iyakkam, an anti-corruption forum, told The Hindu that while there is "no legal bar against the unveiling of Jayalalithaa's portrait, it is not appropriate". He called upon the government to drop the idea at once and said his party would appr-oach the court to stop initiative, if necessary.

In this unique context of apparent crime and ultimate conviction, any undue glorifying of a convicted person (case abated just because she had died) will only set a very bad precedent as the late chief minister was convicted in the case.

Stalin said Jayalalithaa's portrait demeans the portraits of other leaders in the Assembly - portraits of former Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar and others.

"The Speaker P Dhanapal will unveil the portrait, in the presence of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam", the press release issued by Assembly Secretary says.
