Joaquin Phoenix to play Joker in Todd Phillips' standalone movie

And it looks as though fans will once-again see a new and very different side to The Joker, as Joaquin Phoenix is said to be in talks to play the character in Todd Phillips' new movie.

According to Variety, Inherent Vice and Walk the Line star Joaquin Phoenix has agreed to play the Clown Prince of Crime.

Phoenix has been the top choice to take on other superhero roles before, but has been resistant to joining any major studio blockbuster.

Phillips will co-write the movie with Scott Silver, as well as direct, and has reportedly been in talks with Phoenix since late past year, so things are not looking too promising for Tommy.

Back in September, we reported that Leonardo DiCaprio, a frequent collaborator with Scorsese, was originally rumored to be eyed for the role. According to Variety, in the past, the actor was considered for the role of Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", as well as another role in Disney-Marvel's "Doctor Strange".

Confusingly, it has been reported that he will likely reprise the role in Suicide Squad 2 and the Joker-Harley Quinn movie that is now in development.

The film is set to take place in the 1980s, and will primarily focus on the events that led The Joker to become iconic deplorable with a penchant for terror.

This would mean that he'll follow in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto when it comes to playing the DC villain on the big screen.

The film would be the first in a new strain of DC Comic films, giving the studio a chance to expand their repertoire and create unique narratives and character pieces that are not a part of their current cinematic universe. He has most recently starred in Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here, Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot and Garth Davis's Mary Magdalene.
