N.Korean delegation leaves S.Korea

Pence and Moon worked this out during their bilateral meeting Thursday at the Blue House and their joint viewing of speed-skating heats in Pyeongchang on Saturday evening.

"We don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past".

The prospect of two-way talks between the Koreas, however, may not be welcomed by the United States.

The Trump administration has discouraged South Korea from engaging with the North, which has been subjected to increasingly tough global sanctions, unless it shows clear signs of giving up its nuclear weapons programme.

Pence and South Korea's President Moon Jae-in agreed to pursue dialogue with North Korea during conversations at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the Washington Post reported.

They met and lunched with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the second day at the presidential complex. She also extended an invitation to President Moon to visit her brother in Pyongyang, which potentially sets up the first meeting of Korean leaders since 2007. "I think it is different from the last 20years", Pence explained.

As he left the games, US Vice President Mike Pence said: There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile programme.

"The vice president is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions", Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said when asked about the developments.

ROK Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon (R) shakes hands with the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un's sister and special envoy Kim Yo Jong prior to a luncheon meeting at a Seoul hotel on February 11, 2018.

Pence and the North Korean delegation sat near each other at the ceremony but did not acknowledge or speak to each other.

He arrived late for a pre-opening ceremony reception hosted by Moon and stayed for only five minutes before leaving for a scheduled meeting with US athletes, without even shaking hands with the DPRK delegation head Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.

Civilian contact is strictly banned between the two Koreas, which have been divided since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

Moon has not yet accepted the invitation from Kim Yo Jong, although he has said before he'd be willing to visit if it would help end the North's pursuit of nuclear weapons and its decades of hostility and threats against the South.

If the United States is earnest about its hope for peace on the peninsula, it should cancel joint military drills with South Korea after the PyeongChang games so as to preserve the growing rapprochement on the peninsula.

The isolated North sent hundreds of athletes, cheerleaders and other figures to cross the border to take part in the Games.

The spokesman says Moon replied that the North and South should continue to work to build conditions so that a summit can take place. "And he is encouraging both sides to come together".
