Nancy Pelosi sets record with 8-hour speech on DACA

Nancy Pelosi sets record with 8-hour speech on DACA

Though move isn't technically a filibuster (which can only occur in the Senate) according to USA Today, she's able to speak for as long as she wants during a debate because she's a party leader. Social media users appreciated her effort, starting the trend #GoNancyGo.

"Pelosi was speaking against a compromise federal budget deal recently announced by Senate leaders that would lift spending caps and avert a looming government shutdown €" but that does not address the sensitive issue of immigration. "Maybe I should bring my rosary, blessed by the Pope", said Pelosi, who is Catholic.

"Our plea to the speaker is for us, for ourselves, to honor the values of our founders", she continued. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) wondered.

The House Democratic leader started speaking at around 10am and completed her speech at 6.11pm to a standing ovation from around 50 Democrats left in the chamber.

Despite a few dissenters in the Senate, it is expected to pass with bipartisan support.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, the group that works to increase the Republican majority in the House, tweeted to Pelosi, writing, "Dear @NancyPelosi Every minute you're in front of the cameras, you make our job easier". Members of the House only get a minute to make their comments - except party leaders like Pelosi, who get an unspecified amount of time.

Controlled explosion after Syrian anti-aircraft missile downs Israeli fighter jet
The seriously-injured pilot was disconnected from respiration and his condition is now defined as moderate, the hospital said. As the Israeli planes came under attack, one of the jets was hit. "We are not looking to escalate the situation", he added.

She said she will oppose the deal unless House Speaker Paul Ryan commits to bringing up DACA legislation for a vote. Her speech ranked as the longest given by a member of the House of Representatives in at least a century, possibly ever, focusing on an issue that has vexed Democrats for months.

Gutierrez then said Democrats who vote for this budget proposal ought to prepare for when Republicans "come after" gay people and Muslims next. When Democrats have been in the minority, she has kept her representatives in check, even as Ryan and his predecessors have had to pull bills from the House floor because they got the whip count wrong. It suggests too that Mrs Pelosi's eyes are fixed more tightly on mid-terms in November than on immigration.

Both parties want to prevent deportations of the almost 700,000 immigrants who have lived in the USA illegally as minors but now can work or attend school as young adults under DACA.

"Speaker Ryan has already repeatedly stated we intend to do a DACA and immigration reform bill - one that the President supports", AshLee Strong said in a statement. He told Congress it had until March, when DACA recipients will begin to lose protections in larger numbers, to pass a bill to help them. Many others, however, said after the caucus meeting that they weren't sure how they would vote, and several said they had no comment to share.

With the government unfunded in a matter of days, and its debt ceiling unlifted, Democrats have leverage to achieve specific goals despite being in the minority on both sides of Congress. Pelosi fears they're about to surrender it. So, to recap - a person who is not in line with the rest of his party's leadership, who is very likely no longer answerable to the people, who commands vast power in the largest governing body in the United States and arguably the one most directly representative of the people's intention, is directly betraying that intention in order to engage in what could be a final months-long exercise in borderline tyranny.
