NBC fires analyst following 'ignorant, insensitive' on-air comment about South Korea

Former journalist Joshua Cooper Ramo, working as an analyst for NBC, said on-air during the Pyeongchang Games opening ceremony that all Koreans recognised that Japan had served as an important example in South Korea's own economic transformation. "Few Koreans would agree with what Ramo said of Japan". Ramo's comments were initially criticized for his bland comments, but he sparked some outrage when he pointed out Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan.

"Some say it's questionable whether Ramo has been even following the news leading up to the current Olympics, as some of the disputes between South Korea and Japan erupted even during the preparation phase of the games", the Korea Herald added, mentioning as an example the unified Korean flag that Ramo liked so much.

The network was left red-faced by the comments of former journalist Joshua Cooper Ramo, who worked as a commentator during coverage of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Koreans around the world criticised Ramo's remarks on social media and a petition soon circulated online. The unnamed NBC Sports official told the Korea Times that NBC also sent a letter of apology to the PyeongChang Organizing Committee.

NBC didn't catch the mind-boggling gaffe despite broadcasting the opening ceremonies on tape in the United States - 14 hours after it happened.

Myanmar says soldiers, police facing action over village killing
On January 10, the military said the 10 Rohingya men belonged to a group of 200 "terrorists" who had attacked security forces. More than 620,000 Rohingya are thought to have fled to Bangladesh following persecution from the Burmese military.

The network responded quickly after the backlash, announcing Ramo's assignment with the Olympics is now over, and NBC offered an apology both in writing and during the broadcast.

"Any reasonable person familiar with the history of Japanese imperialism, and the atrocities it committed before and during WWII, would find such statement deeply hurtful and outrageous", the petition read. That split gave us North Korea and South Korea, and a long history of conflict between the nations that continues to this day. By Sunday, more than 8,000 people had signed it.

The network had no real explanation for the insane comment other than to say sorry.
