North Korea's over-the-top cheerleaders cause a stir in Pyeongchang

North Korea's over-the-top cheerleaders cause a stir in Pyeongchang

North Korea has emerged as the early favourite to grab one of the Winter Olympics' most important medals: the diplomatic gold.

The number of mentions of "Pyongyang2018" spiked during Friday's opening ceremony, when hosts South Korea and the North - two countries technically still at war - marched together behind the Korean unification flag.

Vice President Mike Pence's efforts to keep North Korea from stealing the show at the Winter Olympics proved short-lived, drowned out by images of the two Koreas marching and competing as one.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday invited the South's President Moon Jae-in for a summit in Pyongyang, Seoul said.

Throughout the ceremony there were constant winks to peace, such as the theme "Imagine" by John Lennon, an ode to coexistence, sung by four well-known South Korean singers.

It inspired an American member of the International Olympic Committee to call for the team, which included 12 North Korean players, to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

That is the assessment of a former South Korean government minister and political experts who say the North has used the Games to drive a wedge between South Korea and its USA ally and to potentially ease pressure on its sanctions-crippled state.

"I was encouraged by the affirmation of our alliance and our common objective, from both (Japanese) Prime Minister Abe and President Moon", Pence said.

United States Vice-President Mike Pence was also present and led the U.S. delegation. Speaking to NBC's "Nightly News" on Thursday, the vice president continued to stress that the U.S. would protect itself from North Korean nuclear threats by taking whatever "action is necessary to defend our homeland".

Speaking at his swearing in ceremony previous year, Moon said he would be willing to travel to Pyongyang "under the right conditions", adding that "for peace on the Korean Peninsula, I will do everything that I can do".

Trump signs budget deal, bringing end to second shutdown of 2018
Trump tweeted Friday morning that he had signed the bill , writing that the US military "will now be stronger than ever before". Paul spoke out over the increased deficits and told everyone he would be willing to cause a shutdown .

In a rare public moment, President Moon shook hands with Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un, at start of the opening ceremony.

The KCNA report cited Moon as saying inter-Korean relations should be mended by the parties concerned "at any cost as indicated by Chairman Kim Jong Un in his New Year Address".

Later in the day, Moon and Kim travelled the width of the peninsula, coming to Gangeung, the coastal city on the east coast, to watch the first game of the just-formed inter-Korean women's ice hockey team together.

Asked later if Moon's desire to accept the North Korean invitation to visit Pyongyang undermined Pence's trip or detracted from his message, a senior administration official said: "No, I don't think it does in the least". He left the reception five minutes later.

Pence and Moon took two very different diplomatic approaches to the North Korean delegation's attendance at the games in Pyeongchang.

The South Korean president also stressed the need for the communist North to resume its dialogue with the United States.

Readily compromising with North Korea without securing its denuclearization would create room for Pyongyang to further develop weapons of mass destruction.

Kim Yong Nam, the North's nominal head of state who was also at Saturday's meeting, said "even unexpected difficulties and ordeals could be surely overcome and the future of reunification brought earlier when having a firm will and taking courage and determination to usher in a new heyday of inter-Korean relations".

Others chanted 'Let's tear Kim Jong-un to death!' while tearing up a picture of the North Korean leader.

By also sending a youthful, photogenic individual who would surely draw worldwide attention at the Olympics, Kim might have also been trying to construct a fresher image of the country, particularly in face of US efforts to use the Olympics as an occasion to highlight the North's brutal human rights record.
