Olympics: Mike Pence doesn't stand for Korea, skips meal with North Koreans

Tensions between the two soared a year ago as Pyongyang tested missiles capable of reaching the US mainland and its most powerful nuclear device to date, while Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump traded personal insults and threats of war.

Though South Korea is hosting the Winter Olympic Games for the first time, the nation has some experience in the world of global athletics, having hosted the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul.

According to the Blue House, Yo Jong told Moon that Jong Un wanted to meet the president "in the near future" and would like for him to visit the North "at his earliest convenience".

The offer could put Moon in a delicate diplomatic quandary, but he avoided a direct response, said his spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom, and called instead for efforts to "create the right conditions" for a visit.

The prospect of two-way talks between the Koreas, however, may not be welcomed by the United States.

North Korea's delegation to the games will conclude its visit later on Sunday, having appeared to thaw the rift with the South, but there is scepticism about how honest Pyongyang is about improving relations.

Mr Pence confirmed that the United States and South Korea had agreed on the terms of further diplomatic engagement with North Korea, first with Seoul before potentially leading to direct talks with Washington.

Any summit between the two still-officially warring Koreas would be a coup for Moon, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over the North's nuclear arms programmes.

Guterres met the 22-member North Korean delegation, which was led by Yong-nam.

Right here's what the brand new Pa. congressional map may appear like
If the governor and the legislature can not agree on a new map by February 15, the state Supreme Court will generate its own. They argued that violated the court order's discussion of "enactment of a remedial congressional districting plan".

Pyongyang conducted its largest nuclear test a year ago and in November tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile that experts said has the range to reach anywhere in the United States.

A senior United States official said Pence and Moon, while watching speed skating together on Saturday night, discussed intensifying sanctions.

"Pence sat in front row and talked to Moon and Abe and their spouses, and the North Koreans sat in the back and didn't talk to anybody, and that image is telling", the official added.

The comments represent a departure from the Trump administration's previous stance that it would not engage in any dialogue with North Korea unless Kim Jong Un's regime first agreed to the goal of denuclearization.

The appearance by the celeb-mimicking pranksters clearly touched a nerve at a politically intense time for the US, North Korea and South Korea.

"The grievances that the world has about North Korea are very legitimate".

A sense of détente, at least for the time being, prevailed in and around the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium Friday as the Winter Games opened in a ceremony where North and South Korean athletes marched under a unified flag.

While the athletes in North and South Korea seem to be putting their differences aside to come together for the Winter Games, Pence is holding his ground.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in December the US was ready to talk without preconditions, only to have the White House nix the notion.
