Renewed global stocks sell-off spreads to FTSE 100 after Dow Jones plunge

The Shanghai Composite index dipped to 3,073.08 Friday morning but recovered slightly before its midday close.

Shares were lower in all Asian markets after Wall Street officially began its first correction in two years, though losses were moderate with no sign of panic selling.

The Dow also plunged Thursday, dropping 1,032 points in its second-worst one-day point decline in history, putting it on track for its worst week since October 2008 during the depths of the financial crisis. The Nasdaq was down 10 points, or 0.2 percent, to 6,765.

After a sharp loss Wednesday, benchmark US crude lost 64 cents, or 1 percent, to $61.15 a barrel in NY. It was up as much as 349 shortly after the opening bell.

Bargain hunting may contribute to early strength on Wall Street after the steep losses seen in the previous session dragged the major averages down to their lowest levels in about two months. "That money will ultimately find its way back into the stock market".

The S&P 500 is down 54.06 points, or 2 percent.

Ninety-six S&P 500 stocks are down 20 percent or more from their own one-year highs, according to Thomson Reuters data. Chipmaker Nvidia added $6.97, or 3.2 percent, to $224.49.

The Dow Jones industrials are down 500 points, extending the market's losses.

World share markets fell on Friday, with U.

Thursday's losses were steady, rather than the sharp falls seen over the past few days, however. The index peaked at 26,616 points just two weeks ago.

The last one happened during the 2008 financial crisis and lasted until March 2009 when the S&P sank almost 57 percent from peak to trough, according to Yardeni Research.

Public transport was chaotic, with some tram and commuter rail lines shut down, and nearly all bus services halted in the capital. Some 230 people had to sleep as best they could at Orly airport south of the capital.

The loonie has been facing weakness from the strength of the US dollar as investors fled to the safety of the reserve currency amid volatility.

Asia's biggest market - Japan's Nikkei 225 index - lost 2.3 per cent.

The S&P 500 looked like it was heading for a slight rebound in Friday's premarket. India's Sensex retreated 1.1 percent to 34,017.83 and benchmarks in New Zealand, Taiwan and Southeast Asia also fell. Higher borrowing costs are viewed as a negative by Wall Street because they slow growth and make stocks less attractive an investment relative to higher-yielding bonds.

In Europe, Germany's DAX fell 1.2 percent, while France's CAC 40 lost 1.4 percent.

The Dow moved in a range of more than 1,000 points.

Shares of Twitter Inc. soared 12% after the microblogging company delivered better-than-expected financial results and reported its first-ever quarter of profitability. The travel website's 2018 outlook also disappointed investors.

Roomba maker iRobot plunged 24 percent after its earnings fell far short of what investors were expecting.

After rising and falling, the S&P 500 was up 7 points, to 2,588, as of 2:59 p.m.

The Dow gained 130 points, or 0.5 percent, to 23,990. The yield on the 10-year note was as low as 2.04 percent as recently as September.

A stock market enters a correction when it drops 10 percent below a recent peak, as us stock did on Thursday.
