South Korea's Leader May Be on Brink of Legacy-Defining Moment

South Korea's Leader May Be on Brink of Legacy-Defining Moment

North Korea's cheerleaders serenaded South Korean fans with tender love songs Saturday as a joint Korean ice hockey team's emotional Olympic debut ended in tears before the sister of Kim Jong Un.

THE MESSENGER North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong (L) hands over an autographed letter from Kim Jong Un to South Korea's President Moon Jae-in (R) during their meeting at the presidential Blue House in Seoul on Saturday.

U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults as tensions rose, with Trump repeatedly dismissing the prospect or value of talks with North Korea.

According to journalists in Pyeongchang for the ceremony, it's unclear what the two impersonators were doing, but they apparently made a scene.

"As we speak, an estimated 100,000 North Korean citizens labour in modern-day gulags", Pence said.

It was the second consecutive night in which Moon and Kim were pictured together after they shared a handshake during last night's Opening Ceremony, where athletes from their respective nations marched side-by-side under the unification flag.

And Pence's personal guest at the games will be Fred Warmbier, the father of Otto Warmbier, an American who died previous year days after his release from captivity in North Korea.

But in their meeting Saturday, the South Korean president also asked North Korea to be amenable to talks with the United States, telling Kim Yo Jong that it was "urgent" for Pyongyang and Washington to start resolving their differences.

Pence knew of the invitation but did not discuss it with Moon while they watched a speed-skating event together, a senior White House official said.

A visit by Moon to the North would enable the first summit between leaders from the two Koreas since 2007, and would mark only the third inter-Korean summit to take place.

I deplore the politics of North Korea.

"She's a pretty important person in the regime", said Michael Madden, an analyst at the U.S. -Korea Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

The initial move the United States wants is for North Korea to put denuclearization on the table and take steps toward it, though that is not a condition for preliminary talks.

Pence led the US delegation to the games this week, where he refused to meet with North Korean officials on Friday.

He also did not shake hands with Kim Yong Nam while making a brief appearance at a leaders' reception ahead of the ceremony-although Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose country is also regularly threatened by Pyongyang, did so, while exchanging pleasantries with the North Korean. But Pence was also warning Seoul not to be fooled by refusing to attend a banquet at the Winter Olympics where he could have met with the high-level North Korean delegation.

"Kim Jong Un is clearly serious about reviving talks with the South to improve relations", said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University and a security adviser to Moon.

With a smile, a handshake and a warm message in South Korea's presidential guest book, Kim Yo Jong has struck a chord with the public just one day into the PyeongChang Games.

Nothing has been settled on any trip north by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The four missiles, atop nine-axled launchers, have the projected range of more than 8,000 miles, putting the U.S. East Coast in its range. One can imagine North Korea continuing to use this strategy throughout the Olympics to promote its own narrative. "The Olympic Games is a symbol of how things might be in the world".
