South Korea's president holds lunch for Kim Jong Un's sister

Visiting US Vice President Mike Pence did not engage with the North Korean representatives just a few seats away at the opening ceremony, and did not get up to cheer when athletes from the host nation and its neighbour entered the arena together behind a unification flag.

North Korea has sent some of the highest level officials ever to the south for these games, the result of diplomacy by Seoul that led to an agreement between the two countries - still formally at war - to participate together in the Winter Games.

Many experts say Kim's overture is meant to use improved ties with Seoul as a way to weaken US -led global sanctions toughened after its series of big weapons tests a year ago that include its sixth and largest nuclear test explosion and three intercontinental ballistic missile launches. The North Koreans were in the room at the same time as Pence, an official said.

The sister of the North Korean leader has arrived in South Korea, dressed in a black coat and absorbing a barrage of camera flashes.

"We have to be unified [with North Korea]". He insisted on Saturday that the U.S., South Korea and Japan were united in their goal of isolating North Korea over the country's nuclear weapons program.

It is rare for the North's official media to refer to the South's leader as president, usually describing them as chief executive or similar, and even more unusual for a picture of them to be shown.

At the Blue House meeting, the delegations shared a lunch of dried pollack dumpling soup, a regional specialty of the only divided province on the Korean peninsula, and soju, a spirit popular on both sides of the heavily militarized border. As a result, almost 500 North Koreans have traveled to South Korea for the games, including top officials.

Coach Sarah Murray recalled pulling up for the game in Incheon and the crowd on the road outside split pretty evenly between people against the North Koreans joining the team and supporters waving flags showing the full Korean peninsula.

Officials traveling with Pence said it would be fair to characterize his failure to interact with the North Koreans as a mutual decision, with neither side making any public overtures.

North and South Korea are technically still at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

The North Koreans have invited Moon to visit Pyongyang in what would be the third inter-Korean summit talks since their 1945 division.

Moon, who was seated in front of the North Korean delegation, was photographed shaking hands with a smiling Kim.

Whatever its true intentions, the normally adversarial North Korea's propaganda campaign to present some sort of detente with its neighbors to the South is on full display.

At the same press event, Pence confirmed that he had not requested a meeting with any members of the North Korean delegation.

In sharp contrast with the "for-us-by-us-detente" message that Kim Jong Un is pushing - while explicitly telling the U.S.to mind its own business - Pence's demands for the North to abandon nuclear ambitions before any talks seem all the more harsh.

Moon has also dismissed a call by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to quickly resume the U.S.

United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters at United Nations headquarters that Guterres sat near 90-year-old Kim Yong Nam at a dinner Friday night, and they were also near each other during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Abe said during the talks: "The firm trilateral relationship of Japan, the United States and South Korea will never be shaken".

"What can not be overlooked is that Moon did not directly demand North Korea to abandon its nuclear development ..."

Its progress has accelerated under leader Kim Jong Un, culminating in its sixth and biggest nuclear test in September 2017.
