Teens are fleeing Facebook in record numbers

Teens are fleeing Facebook in record numbers

In detail, the eMarketer analysis shows Facebook will lose around 2 million users aged 24 and under, during 2018.

For the first time, the majority of United States internet users between the ages of 12 and 17 won't use Facebook once a month this year, eMarketer said. According to a new report, Facebook will keep losing youngsters while Instagram and Snapchat will gain more users aged 24 and under. While Facebook still stands well ahead of Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter in terms of overall user numbers, the drop among younger age groups suggests that its rivals are taking some of the share.

Young people might use the internet more, but Facebook is targeting a wider audience that includes older individuals who use the social network to connect with their family, friends, coworkers, and more. Snapchat's popularity with teens and young adults rose significantly since the platform first launched in 2011.

eMarketer also expects the number of Facebook users aged 12-17 and 18-24 to decrease by 5.6 per cent and 5.8 per cent, respectively.

Over-55s will become the second-biggest group on the network, as 700,000 people aged 12 to 24 defect to services such as Snapchat, according to predictions by eMarketer.

'There are now some early signs that younger social network users are being swayed by Snapchat'.

Facebook remains the most popular social network in the USA market with an estimated 169.5 million users this year, according to eMarketer. "But not all of those users are migrating to Instagram".

The report said Snapchat will add 1.9 million users under 25 in 2018 and Instagram will add 1.6 million.

The under-12 age group meanwhile will experience a decline of 9.3 percent this year, eMarketer said. Eighty-nine percent were using Snapchat, up from 29 percent four years ago.

According to eMarketer, the largest growth is expected to be among older social network users.

Last year, eMarketer predicted Facebook would see declines among some youths for the first time in its history.
