Trump signs budget deal, bringing end to second shutdown of 2018

Trump tweeted Friday morning that he had signed the bill, writing that the US military "will now be stronger than ever before".

Republicans in Congress have always talked a good game about cutting government spending and being fiscally responsible, but they sure have a knack for never following through and only making things worse.

Republicans are pinning their long-term hopes on their $1.5 trillion tax cut, which they say eventually will stimulate enough economic growth to help reduce the deficit. It was the government's second shutdown in three weeks, and most lawmakers were eager to avoid a big show of dysfunction in an election year.

The Kentucky senator, a sometimes Trump ally, forced the brief government shutdown by using Senate rules to run out the clock before voting could begin. "Also means JOBS, JOBS, JOBS", Trump said in a tweet.

The Senate passed the measure 71-28.

Paul spoke out over the increased deficits and told everyone he would be willing to cause a shutdown.

On Sept. 5, President Trump terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, the Obama-era initiative that has protected almost 800,000 of them from deportation.

"There's no secret plan here to try to push this in any direction, and the Senate's going to work its will", McConnell said.

Three weeks ago, Senate Democrats dug in and made a decision to use a deadline to try to force Republicans to work with them on a deal for "Dreamer" immigrants, whose protections from deportation are due to expire in March. Some estimates put the proposed increase in spending - which includes 165 billion dollars in extra defence funds - at even higher than the 300 billion dollar quoted figure.

He's advocated pulling USA troops out of Afghanistan and once expressed his opposition in principle to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, though he later said he opposed its repeal.

While House minority leader Nancy Pelosi stole the headlines on Wednesday when she delivered a record-breaking eight-hour speech on the House floor denouncing the Bill and calling for a deal on immigration, it was Republicans' turn on Thursday.

The debt hike, in particular, is giving conservatives "heartburn", said Rep.

President Trump said he agreed to domestic spending increases that he called a "waste" in order to get increased military spending and end a government shutdown that was over before it started. Sure, people had their issues with the thing-House conservatives like Mark Sanford hated the $300 billion price tag; House Democrats like Nancy Pelosi wanted a commitment from Paul Ryan that he would hold a vote on DACA legislation; and market experts were (and are!) deeply anxious that increasing deficits will further freak out investors.

"Unfortunately, the Dreamers have become pawns in this whole process", said Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.

Different groups are working to prepare legislation for the immigration effort, including conservatives who are working on a legislative version of President Donald Trump's proposed framework and a group of bipartisan senators who have been meeting almost daily to try to reach agreement on the issue.

The Trump administration signaled it expected the shutdown to be short, calling it a "lapse".

Some Democrats dismiss such a short-term compromise.

"I understand and share the concerns about the debt", said Abraham. "The Dreamers have said, 'Do not do that to us and our families'".

Paul, however, voted in favor of President Trump's tax reform, which is projected to increase the deficit by at least $1 trillion.
