Aadhaar Linking Deadline Likely To Get Extended Beyond March 31. Details Here

It passed the interim order after it was informed that the CBSE had made Aadhaar mandatory for aspiring medical students appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-2018). A five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to upload this information on their website to avoid confusion for students.

The petitioners, who approached the court against the CBSE notification and others who have challenged the Aadhaar scheme, said the government had been issuing several such notifications, which in fact, amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court's orders.

Senior advocate Arvind Datar, appearing for one of the petitioners, told the bench that the court should take suo motu cognisance against government authorities for making Aadhaar mandatory in violation of apex court's interim order.

The court said the CBSE, which conducts the exam, should accept alternative proofs of identity such as passport, driving licence and voter identity card instead of insisting on Aadhaar cards. The current deadline is less than a month away and the aadhaar case is unlikely to be decided in the apex court before that.

The government has decided to make the linking of Aadhaar numbers to bank accounts and mobile numbers mandatory.

The deadline for linking Aadhaar IDs with PAN cards was initially extended from June 30, 2017, to end August 2017 then December 31, 2017, to finally March 31, 2018.

The petition was mentioned before the Chief Justice in the morning by Jain as the last date for registration for NEET is March 9 and hence there was urgency in the matter.

On 15 December past year, the apex court had extended till 31 March the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various services and welfare schemes. But, contrary to this the Prevention of Money Laundering Act makes a citizen duty bound to get Aadhaar. The bench is hearing a bunch of petitions against the Aadhaar (UIDAI) law. "Thousands of students are suffering, uncertain about their future. the Supreme Court has to send a clear message. something has to be done", Mr. Datar urged the five-judge Bench.

Arguments in Aadhaar matter from petitioners side remained inconclusive and would continue on March 13.
