CIA's Pompeo brings insider's touch to secretary of state role

CIA's Pompeo brings insider's touch to secretary of state role

AFP News reports that while addressing reporters before leaving on a trip to California, Trump spoke openly of his disagreements with Tillerson - including over the Iran nuclear deal - as he explained his decision to replace him.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo, if confirmed as the next secretary of state, would bring a number of assets to his new role as the top US diplomat: the confidence of President Donald Trump, government experience and an insider's knowledge of Congress and the federal bureaucracy.

Haspel, who has extensive overseas experience, briefly ran a secret CIA prison where terror suspects Abu Zubayadah and Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri were waterboarded in 2002, according to current and former US intelligence officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Tillerson's departure capped months of friction between the Republican president and the 65-year-old former Exxon Mobil chief executive, who had no diplomatic or political experience before becoming secretary of state.

The president said Tuesday morning that he and Tillerson disagreed on too many issues to work well together.

He announced that deputy CIA Director Gina Haspel will become the new director, and the first woman so chosen.

The news broke just hours after Tillerson debarked from a plane from a weeklong trip to Africa.

He tried to salvage the Iran nuclear deal through a European-brokered fix to the Obama-era agreement, rather than having Trump scuttle the deal completely.

Mr. Trump tweeted on Tuesday that he has selected Gina Haspel to replace Mike Pompeo.

We have eight matches still to play and 24 points to play for (in the Premier League). When you are younger than I am and you are learning the game I think you do need it.

Trump said he and Pompeo have "a similar thought process".

"I felt like, look, I just need to get back", Mr Tillerson told reporters on his plane home, reports the Washington Post.

According to the Washington Post, Trump asked Tillerson to step aside last Friday.

A White House official said Trump wanted to have a new team in place ahead of upcoming talks with North Korea and various trade talks.

It also comes amid a dramatic diplomatic opening with North Korea, with Trump set to hold a historic meeting with leader Kim Jong Un in May.

But the message Trump delivered to Tillerson on Tuesday can be summarized in the two-word phrase he used to deliver with gusto on "The Apprentice": "You're fired". "I wish him all the best in his future endeavors". Paid $27.3 million past year, Tillerson has accumulated roughly $160 million in Exxon stock along with $149 million of unvested stock options, according a proxy statement the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In fact, according to a report by Fox News, the president chose to make this decision ahead of the expected upcoming summit between him and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

This administration feels a lot like a cycle of "America's Next Top Model" or Trump's own "Celebrity Apprentice" because it was only a few weeks ago that we were making a list and checking it twice for the total firings since Trump took office. Last week, Trump's chief economic advisor Gary Cohn resigned after the president announced he would impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The Federation Council's International Affairs Committee deputy chairman Vladimir Dzhabarov said that Pompeo "may have the chance to become a man who will stop our relations from dropping rock-bottom", the RBC business portal reported.
