Death toll in Florida bridge collapse jumps to 9

Death toll in Florida bridge collapse jumps to 9

At least eight cars were trapped when the 950-ton (ton) bridge suddenly gave way on Thursday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Paul Estopinan said.

The confirmation of a project meeting hours before the collapse raises the question of what - if any - action was ordered out of the gathering, and whether participants discussed the need to close the roadway beneath the bridge as a result of any action plan.

"Until all the pieces are put together to transmit the loads safely to the foundations, these bridges may suffer disproportionate or full collapse due to instability", Aref said.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio has confirmed construction crews were working at the bridge when the collapse happened.

NTSB investigators were also asked about the cables shown in the photo renderings of what the bridge would look like when complete.

Andrew Herman, a former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, told USA Today that it seemed the builders did not follow the proper sequence in putting the bridge up.

It's not unusual for prominent construction companies to contribute to politicians, and the bridge was a federally funded project. The engineer, W Denney Pate, left a voicemail on the landline of a department employee.

State officials say two days before the collapse that killed at least six people, an engineer left a voicemail saying some cracking had been found at one end of the span, though it wasn't believed to be a safety issue.

FDOT also says that it was not made away by the FIU design build team of any scheduled "stress testing" of the bridge following Saturday's installation. At no point during any of the communications above did FIGG or any member of the FIU design build team ever communicate a life-safety issue.

Flatbed trucks carried the vehicles, draped in black tarps, to the medical examiner's office, where the remains of the three victims would be identified, according to Miami-Dade Police.

His first priority was clearing the area and getting the dead to their families. "We just want to find out what caused this collapse to occur and people to die".

Because the bridge's central tower and suspension cables were not yet installed, the Miami Herald notes, any cables being tightened were likely wires that ran through the span.

"It is important that we understand, this is a homicide investigation".

"The FIGG engineer of record delivered a technical presentation regarding the crack and concluded that there were no safety concerns and the crack did not compromise the structural integrity of the bridge", the university said in a statement, adding that representatives of the school and the transportation department attended the session, which lasted two hours. Two of his co-workers are among the nine injured. Virginia's labor department later fined Figg for construction violations, and a subcontractor sued accusing the firm of negligence and poor design.
