Equity benchmarks Nifty50 and Sensex closed in the red on Friday due to selling in metal, bank and pharma stocks.

On concerns regarding the possibility of global trade wars impacting India, Mr Choksey noted that India imports more than what it exports and we have fair trade equation with both USA and the European Union.

The barometer 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE surged over 400 points to scale an intra-day high of 33,439.97 points, with healthy buying in banking, auto and capital goods stocks adding to the upward trajectory.

The domestic indices were trading in range on Friday taking cues from their Asian counterparts. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 6.20 points or 0.08% at 10,248.85 with 24 components gaining. South Korean stocks enjoyed their best day since May with a rise of 1.76 per cent. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.6 per cent.

Equities ended the day with modest losses as early gains were erased by a bout of fag-end selling, led by metal stocks which came under heavy selling pressure after the United States imposed tariffs on some steel and aluminium imports, fanning fears of a global trade tussle.

Analysts feel that domestic markets have largely discounted global cues, but added that the uncertainty around the tariff on steel and aluminium imports proposed by Trump could have a short-term impact on steel companies.

"Market reversed from the last six days losing streak as ease in trade war concerns and short covering in PSU banks supported the rally".

Figures from the National Securities Depository (NSDL) revealed that foreign portfolio investors invested in equities worth Rs 1,384.36 crore, or $212.98 million, during March 5-9.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee weakened by 26 paise to close at 65.15 against the USA dollar from its previous close at 64.89.
