Gold, Platinum Bars Spill Across Russian Runway As Plane Door Flies Open

Gold, Platinum Bars Spill Across Russian Runway As Plane Door Flies Open

Now, imagine if your bags were loaded with diamonds, platinum, and gold (I guess you're Offset in this hypothetical situation).

What could appear to be stuff of fairy tales however, became a fact in Russia's Yakutsk Airport when an Antonov AN-12 aircraft took off on Thursday.

A "gold rush" started among residents in eastern Siberia after dozens of gold bars fell out of a cargo plane as it was taking off, according to Russian media.

Reports suggest some bars of gold were scattered up to 15 miles away from the airport.

Yakutsk is located in a mining area for gold and diamonds.

However, the Nimbus Airlines AN-12 cargo aircraft made an emergency landing in Magan after it began haemorrhaging valuables. Some 172 gold bars have already been found. According to the Mash Telegram channel, the total cargo is worth the hefty sum of 21.6 billion rubles (US$380 million).

The Siberian Times reports that the plane was flying to a gold mine in Krasnoyarsk called Kupol.

Police sealed off the runway to launch a search of the area. Yakutsk (the flight's city of origin) is the capital of Russia's main diamond producing region, Yakutia.

The cargo belonged to Chukotka Mining and Geological Company, a private company based in Anadyr in Russian Federation and mostly owned by Kinross Gold, a Canadian-based gold and silver mining company.
