January Nebraska jobless rate matches December 2.9 percent

Maryland gained almost 13,000 jobs in January as the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1 percent, the U.S. Labor Department said Monday.

Florida's jobless rate in January was unchanged from the end of 2017, according to numbers posted Monday by the state Department of Economic Opportunity.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that only six states and the District of Columbia saw jobless rates decline in January while unemployment rates held steady in 44 states.

The state's nonfarm employment increased by 9,200 overall with job gains led by durable goods manufacturing, up 2,100 and wholesale trade, up 3,200. Private-sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, grew by 7,500 compared with January 2017, or 0.7 percent.

"Wisconsin workers are benefitting from a strong labor market, demonstrated by our record low unemployment rate for the month of January, and a new all-time high for number of individuals employed in the state of Wisconsin", said state Department of Workforce Development secretary Ray Allen. The size of the local labor force also declined in January, but there were 231 more people counted as unemployed than there were in January. The county added 12,300 jobs, an increase of 1.5 percent over the year. This was a result of 4,105 unemployed residents no longer seeking employment within the past four weeks, and a 3,189 decrease in residents employed. The jobless rate had reached 3.6 percent in November. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2016, the labour force participation rate is 1.7 percentage points higher.
