Japan's Kono, S. Korea envoy agree to keep pressure on N. Korea

So why talks now?

National Security Council chief Chung Eui-yong on Monday briefed Chinese leaders on his recent meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"If they do decide to denuclearize, it will be a temporary denuclearization that they will agree to", said Carranza.

Now, in a head-snapping display of incoherence, Trump has agreed to meet Kim, giving the planet's worst human-rights abuser what he most wants: global legitimacy.

The Korean peninsula has been split since the end of the World War II, with a Soviet- and Chinese-linked communist regime in the North and a US-linked democratic nation in the South.

Under Kim Jong-un, ties with the United States have gone from bad to worse, leading to open fears of conflict.

The US expects North Korea to halt all nuclear and missile testing in advance of any meeting, Mr Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on Sunday news shows.

After drubbing the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 11, they took another step closer to that goal. "There's not much you can do". The Cavaliers suffered a 127-113 defeat to LA Lakers , but James certainly provided a bit of magic.

Experts suggest North Korea could offer to stop developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). At that meeting, Kim stunned the diplomats by saying that he was open to talking with the Americans about his nuclear program, willing to suspend nuclear and missile testing to open the way for talks without insisting that the US and South Korea suspend their joint military exercises that have always been a source of tension. In recent years, the North has repeatedly tested nuclear bombs and intercontinental ballistic missiles which, it announced a few months ago, can now reach any city on the U.S. mainland.

No. There is no date and no location as yet. "The U.S. wants a peace treaty at the end of the denuclearization process, while for the North, it's the precondition for its denuclearization". North Korea has also not yet formally responded to the announcement of talks last week.

The White House said Trump's meeting with Kim would take place "at a place and time to be determined". That doesn't seem to be the case here - this South Korean-brokered meeting has come somewhat out of the blue.

"He has dealt with North Korea's nuclear program under the Obama administration and is one of those who understand North Korea well", he said.

Some experts are concerned that North Korea could be seeking to delay worldwide action while strengthening its nuclear program.

"So look, I know it's easy to presume the worst because Trump is basically a nuclear knowledge free zone, but what if he gets it right anyway?" Kim is likely to raise the possibility of such a treaty along with establishing diplomatic relations and moving toward nuclear disarmament, during a meeting with the USA leader, the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper said Monday, citing an unidentified senior official in South Korea's presidential office. The envisioned meeting would be a historic first between leaders of the two Cold War foes. But others warn that if the talks go badly, the situation could become worse than before. Beijing has long feared instability and a possible collapse of North Korea, which could result in a unified peninsula allied with the United States, and American troops deployed close to the border with China.

Dismissing concerns over the shortage of US officials who have experience dealing with North Korea, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert earlier said that it has "plenty of people who are more than qualified to have these types of conversations". And with many details to work through, there's a lot of work to be done before the meeting becomes a certainty.
