Karti Chidambaram sent to judicial custody till March 24

A court on Monday sent senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram to judicial custody till March 24 in the INX Media corruption case. It alleged irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to a media house, INX Media, for receiving funds of about Rs 305 crore from overseas in 2007 when his father was the Union finance minister.

Special CBI judge Sunil Rana allowed Karti, who was arrested in the INX Media case, to carry his medicines, after the jail doctor clears it, and his spectacles, while rejecting his plea to have home food, toiletries and books.

Karti Chidambaram has been in CBI custody for questioning since his arrest from Chennai Airport on February 28.

Karti's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom during the hearing today.

There is an apprehension that there is grave threat to the safety and security of Karti in judicial custody and therefore, he should be lodged in separate prison.

His remand comes to an end today and the CBI would seek three more days custody.

Karti's advocate Daya Krishnan plea filed in the court says, "Since Chidambaram had taken charge as a home minister just after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and had several accused under MCOCA prosecuted, so there is an absolute threat to his life at Tihar Jail".

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the special court that the CBI had recovered evidence to prove that Karti Chidambaram had direct links with Advantage Strategic, which allegedly received lakhs of rupees for facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approvals for INX Media and Aircel companies.

While admitting that the apprehension raised cannot be ignored keeping in view the social status of the accused and his family, the judge said, "only keeping in view the fact of social status of the accused and his father, he cannot be treated different from other accused persons and cannot be allowed to be kept in separate prison". He was first sent to the CBI custody, where he was being interrogated till now. The CBI FIR, lodged on May 15 past year, had alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media.

He was arrested because Indrani Mukerjea and her husband, Peter Mukerjea had testified that they did grant bribe to him to issue the clearance.
