Luke Bryan Leaned on Blake Shelton for Television Judge Advice

When "American Idol" first aired in 2002, it was subtitled "The Search for a Superstar", and when the show premieres Sunday night that's just what judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will be doing.

For the time being, our feeling is that the premiere on Sunday will probably bring in a 2.0 in the live+same-day ratings, mostly because of the long layoff between seasons, ABC's promotional campaign, and the presence of Katy Perry as a judge. Plus, original "Idol" champion Kelly Clarkson reacts to the reboot going up against "The Voice" on Monday nights - what do new "Idol" judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan think? The season kicks off tonight, Sunday, March 11 at 8:00 p.m. EST on ABC.

She explained to People: "We really encourage them". Mills insists that's doable: "Idol", he says, "looked like it had been neglected for a while on Fox, and as we've seen with any show - from "The Bachelor" to "Survivor" - there will always be ebbs and flows, but if you really take care of them, they can be strong assets". But weirdly, the one judge in the new Idol who even comes close to Cowell's truth-bomb fusillade is Perry, a pop star who rose to prominence by playing herself as a fifth grader's dream of adulthood.

Will it be awkward with Ryan Seacrest out there?

She later added: "Literally, we are wasting our time if we do not find a star. You know, America doesn't need another star".

"There are people out there who want to sing country music but don't know that you have to move to Nashville, start playing in town and pay your dues". (What can I say, dawg?) At first, I didn't even mind Simon's brutal criticism.

He scored 19 points on the night and all five of his field goals were threes. "Russell was an average ball handler", Self began. Clemson has been a bit more of a defensive-oriented team as well, but is coming off a 90-82 shootout with Boston College .

Yet talent salaries in the final seasons had ballooned to $45 million (Jennifer Lopez was pulling down $20 million; Seacrest, Idol's sole constant, was making $15 million). "I mean, I have a guy and this bass lake and his job is to grow the bass to the biggest bass in the world", Bryan admitted to laughter among the audience.

To borrow a song title, Luke, we're "Drunk on You".

The last American Idol definitely had it's share of contentious judging decisions.

That particular audition-I'm trying not to give much away here-starts with Idol's worst tendency (ridicule) and ends with the show at its best (an expert identifying and affirming another person's talent).

What she's saying there, I think, is: "I'm aware of how your personality is built for a touchy-feely reality show montage, but at some point you'll have to actually prove you can get onstage and wow us". Sometimes you have to separate the story from what we're really going for. She kindly tells contestants that other people are quite simply out-singing them or that they need to continue to work on their skills or that their voice is better suited for a different medium.
