Michael Carrick Confirms Retirement, Likely to Join Jose Mourinho's Coaching Staff

The former England worldwide made the announcement at United's press conference on Monday ahead of the Champions League last-16, second-leg match against Sevilla.

The 36-year-old, who joined Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for an £18m fee, became a mainstay in his side over the years and has a decorated trophy cabinet - winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League trophy.

Carrick, who was capped 34 times by England, underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heart rhythm, having initially felt unwell during the EFL Cup win over Burton Albion last September.

"There comes a time, wether you like it or you don't like it, that your body tells you it is time to stop playing football". He's only seen action a handful of times this season, but on the eve of United's hosting Sevilla with a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal berth at stake, Carrick still maintains that he'll play a role with the current team before season's end. "It's something that you have got to accept", the Englishman said.

It has always been expected that Carrick would hang up his boots at the end of the campaign - something the veteran confirmed on Tuesday (NZT), along with his intention to take up manager Mourinho's offer to join the coaching staff.

Two Congress members expelled, 11 suspended from TS Assembly
Earlier, the address was marred by slogan-shouting Congress members who accused the TRS government of being "anti-farmer". Following the ruckus, the TRS alleged that several Congress legislators were drunk, adding that they could prove it.

"I think it's pretty much already been said", Carrick told his pre-match press conference. "To be honest with you".

"It's kind of been sorted", added Carrick.

Mourinho confirmed that Anthony Martial is back in contention after an injury of his own, and that Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones remain absent.

"You get that extra spicy feeling, there's that little bit extra to it and we want to be playing these games".

"I understood that I wouldn't be playing as many games, but I've been training hard and trying to keep fit". At least I could decide and not be forced because of that, so I was determined to get back fit.
