Tiger Woods, Ernie Els to serve as Presidents Cup captains again

Tiger Woods will be named the US team's captain for the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia, according to a report by Alex Miceli of the Morning Read, who cited sources.

They produced the biggest moment at the Presidents Cup in 2003 in South Africa when they were picked for a sudden-death playoff. He has played in eight Presidents Cups, winning 24.5 points, second-most in USA history.

Whilst Els might be a logical choice to be the next worldwide team captain, Woods' anticipated appointment comes as more of a surprise, not least because he will be only 43 by the time the match takes place in Melbourne next year.

"Ernie carries the flag for worldwide golf as a legendary figure both on and off the golf course, while Tiger has been one of the most transcendent athletes the sport has ever seen".

Two people involved in the Presidents Cup tell The Associated Press that Woods and Els have agreed to be captains for the 2019 matches in Melbourne.

Can Sammy Watkins Play to His Potential in Chiefs' Now-Loaded Offense?
Watkins signed a three-year deal worth $48 million ($30 million guaranteed) while Hitchens' deal is worth $9 million per year. So the Rams knew Watkins would be exposed to free agency, and likely lured away with big money based on his potential.

"I keep getting just a little bit better and a little bit sharper", Woods said, per CNN.

Tiger Woods has already entertained the idea of player-assistant captain for this year's Ryder Cup.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be the 13th match in the competition's history.

"I'm proud to follow in the footsteps of past captains like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Ken Venturi, Fred Couples, Jay Haas and Steve Stricker". The International team's only victory was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne. One person with knowledge of the decision said Woods reached out to the PGA Tour about his interest in being the next captain. The U.S. won the 2017 match 19-11, its seventh consecutive win. Each player shall play a minimum of one match prior to the final-round singles matches.

After years of battling back issues, Woods looked close to his old dominant self on Sunday when he finished runner-up to Englishman Paul Casey at the Valspar Championship. Captains will later select four captains' picks (at date to be determined) closer to the December 2019 event.
