Airbus To Develop Cargo Sleeping Berths

Airbus and Zodiac Aerospace have partnered to develop and market lower-deck modules with passenger sleeping berths.

In a joint statement, they said the modules will be certified and available for airlines to install by 2020, initially on A330s.

Aircraft colossus Airbus has announced plans to convert the luggage storage areas of its planes into sleeping and recreation areas for passengers.

Airbus has found a new way for passengers to stretch out - as long as they're willing to sleep in the cargo hold.

Other possibilities for the downstairs spaces include a lounge or a conference room above the clouds. Their final design will likely depend on the airlines that field them.

Carriers will be able to order new A330 jets fitted with the modules, or retrofit planes already in service.

Sleeper compartments on the A350 XWB airliner is also be looked at by Airbus and Zodiac, both have experience in producing and integrating lower-deck crew-rest facilities.

Though the exact nature of the compartments will be decided by airlines, the Airbus-Zodiac press release included several suggested mock-ups.

The aircraft's cargo floor and cargo loading system won't be affected, as the passenger module will sit directly on it. A concept video also shows lounge areas for passengers.

Geoff Pinner, Head of Airbus Cabin & Cargo Programme said: "This approach to commercial air travel is a step change towards passenger comfort". In this example, the company suggested a children's play area and a medical center.

However, a spokesman for Airbus tells Australian Business Traveller "the modules will not be occupied during takeoff or landing".

In November 2016 Air France-KLM had put forward the idea of sleeping berths for passengers in economy class, either in the hold or above the cabin in aircraft of the group's new low-priced subsidiary, Joon.
