Australia bushfire threatens Sydney suburbs homes

Australia bushfire threatens Sydney suburbs homes

A large bushfire that has threatened homes in Sydney is likely to have been deliberately lit, Australian authorities say.

More than 500 firefighters from the Rural Fire Service, Fire & Rescue NSW and the Australian Defence Force attempted to contain the blaze over the weekend with help from volunteers and 11 water-bombing helicopters.

Authorities said wind speeds were not as severe on Monday, making it easier to battle the blaze.

"It is still an active fire ground but we are not seeing the sort of weather extremes, particularly with the wind that we saw yesterday", Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

Overnight firefighters backburned along Heathcote Road near Pleasure Point as well as parts of the Holsworthy military base and, on Monday morning, crews were working to slow the spread of the fire.

The huge bushfire that blackened nearly 2,500 hectares of land in Sydney's south west over the weekend is believed to be the work of an arsonist.

RFS spokesman Greg Allan said on Sunday some properties had been damaged.

No homes or lives have been lost, as New South Wales Police launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

"We have had reports of impact on properties in west Menai and Barden Ridge but our crews at the moment are exclusively focused on fighting the fire", he told AAP.

Malaga vs. Real Madrid
Los Blancos are now in fourth place in the league and know that a victory will see them leap-frog Valencia into third place. Malaga are 14 points adrift in the table but Zinedine Zidane remains wary of the dangers of this evening's opposition.

"It was pretty scary", he told AAP when finally opening a beer, thankful his house came with sprinklers on the roof.

Sydney is expecting a top of 25C on Sunday with westerly winds up to 40km/h.

Police believe the fire may have been lit on objective and are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

The out-of-control blaze has destroyed more than 1000 hectares of bushland since Saturday and continues to threaten homes around from Casula near Liverpool to Menai and the Sutherland Shire.

"Still quite a hard day ahead (on Monday)", Rogers told the Nine Network.

"I think we've got a long way to go before we're out of the woods".

At present, the fire threat has been reduced to "advice" level, with residents of Voyager Point, Pleasure Point, Sandy Point, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Illawong, Menai and Bangor warned to remain vigilant and monitor changing conditions.

The Transport Management Centre said Heathcote Road remained closed between New Illawarra Road and Macarthur Drive, and there was no forecast for when the road would be reopened.
