Coli outbreak infects nine in Pa.

Coli outbreak infects nine in Pa.

"Consumer Reports is making this recommendation given the potentially fatal consequences of E. coli, the fact that there are still several unknowns about this outbreak, and that no type of romaine has been ruled definitively safe by government officials", said James E. Rogers, director of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports.

That's similar to the recall Freshway made during the 2010 romaine lettuce E. coli outbreak after an unopened product sample tested positive for E. coli. The symptoms include loss of appetite, fatigue, severe abdominal cramping, diarrhea and fever.

Although none of the confirmed E. coli cases have yet been linked to Fresh Foods, the company is concerned that its romaine supplier may have been involved in the outbreak.

Consumers anywhere in the USA who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce, including salads and salad mixes, should not eat it and throw it away - even if you have eaten some of it already. In most cases, symptoms appear three to four days after the bacteria is ingested. It can take up to 3 to 4 days for symptoms to appear, meaning more cases may be forthcoming. Illnesses that began on or after March 27 may not have been counted yet. No deaths have been reported. Numerous cases so far were contracted from salad mixes used in restaurants, but some cases have been linked to bagged romaine purchased in stores.

CDC urged people to check the origin of the romaine lettuce before buying it at a grocery store or ordering it at a restaurant. Twenty-six (93%) of 28 people interviewed reported consuming romaine lettuce in the week before their illness started. If you can not confirm the source of the romaine lettuce, do not buy it or eat it.

Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten.

Girl found dead with '86 wounds'
The body of the 11-year-old was on April 6 by the police at a ground in Surat's Bhestan area but she has not yet been identified. According to officials, the body was held captive and subjected to rape and torture over a period of time.

Lettuce from restaurants is suspected to be affected, as well as bagged and pre-chopped lettuce from stores.

The current outbreak is not related to a recent multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections from November to December 2017 linked to leafy greens consumption.

While the CDC said investigations pointed to that region, it didn't name any particular grower, supplier or distributor. The Produce Marketing Association, Arizona Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, United Fresh and Western Growers released a statement on the outbreak, and reassured consumers that almost all romaine lettuce now being harvested and shipped throughout the U.S.is from the California growing areas.

CDC also said the number of cases may increase "due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill with E. coli and when the illness is reported".

Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in an April 13 outbreak update that the investigation continues and that it will share more information as it becomes available.
