Commonwealth Games chairman Peter Beattie said critics 'pack of whingers'

Commonwealth Games chairman Peter Beattie said critics 'pack of whingers'

ENGLAND'S NETBALLERS struck gold at the Commonwealth Games after a dramatic win against hosts Australia.

"Bloomin heck", head coach Tracey Neville said.

"Gary's wife sent me a video of him in front of the telly screaming "C'mon, Helen, go on" as if he actually knows these players", she said.

The outpouring on social media suggests plenty around the country were up at the unlikely hour of 4am, including Gary Neville and Michael Vaughan, and the sport's continued growth in the United Kingdom will have been given another huge boost by Sunday's events.

"So we've managed it and other sports can do it too".

The ceremony was even criticised by Australian broadcasters, Channel Seven, with former CWG bronze Medallist Johanna Griggs saying during the live coverage she was "furious" with the decision.

Beattie, who had previously described the CWG as "inspirational" and "innovative", said he was disappointed the viewers at home did not get to see the athletes. Hopefully we can back this up.

"It's unbelievable to have won a bronze medal".

England won their way into their first Games final with a last-second goal against Jamaica a day earlier and reproduced the last-gasp heroics against the world's No.1 team to claim gold.

Madikizela-Mandela, 81, was the hero of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa and ex-wife of that country's first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela.

That final 43 years ago ended in defeat to Australia, but the Roses were determined not to settle for silver and delivered the gold. "It was a dream as a player and I'm living it as a coach though these players' eyes".

Incredibly, just as it had in their semi-final victory over Jamaica, it came down to one shot and one second - the final second of a pulsating 60-minute match that made light of predictions that reigning world and Commonwealth champions Australia would retain their title easily.

But Kiwi chef de mission Rob Waddell says it's important to look at the possibility properly.

Harten and Housby were unerring in shooting at goal, but Australia wrested back the initiative to take a one-point lead at the interval.

Helen Housby, whose score sealed their first victory in a major final, said afterwards on Instagram: "The best day of my life".

"We have worked so hard over the last worldwide phase, we've been put in here against the world number ones and we've not beaten them once in the whole cycle that I've been in".

The 23-year-old Carlisle player admitted she could recall little of the critical goal.

"I don't really have any words". Better than I ever dreamed.
