David Copperfield forced to reveal 'Lucky 13' vanishing trick in court

British tourist Gavin Cox, 58, is suing the illusionist for negligence after he claimed he was injured after taking part in Copperfield's "Lucky #13" trick in Las Vegas in 2013, the BBC reports.

Morelli contends that the audience volunteers, who were participating in the illusion, was hustled via an alley before Cox fell. The show concluded with one of the magician's signature tricks, "Lucky #13".

He admitted audience members were told where they had to go while they were running the route.

The trick, which Copperfield has performed for at least a decade, is a simple vanishing act.

Illusionist David Copperfield stepped onto a Las Vegas stage Wednesday where deception is forbidden: the witness stand.

After which, a curtain will cover the guests, and then the guests will disappear. Standing there are the missing participants.

Lawyers for Mr Copperfield, the world's highest paid magician, argued that revealing the trick would financially harm the magician, but a Las Vegas district court judge demanded an explanation.

Copperfield said, "I can't answer that as a yes-or-no question".

To beat cash crunch, government to print more Rs 500 notes
According to government officials , cash position across the country is improving fast with over 80 percent of 2.2 lakh ATMs operating normally.

Chris Kenner, Mr Copperfield's executive producer, spilled the secrets of the trick in court on Tuesday.

Kenner explained the stunt works by having stagehands guide the participants off the stage and through special hidden passageways while still being concealed by the curtain. At one point, the participants exit and then reenter the building.

Mr Cox claimed the passageway was filled with dust and debris, but the MGM Grand lawyers claimed they were clear.

He was taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder at the time. He claimed that he later began to suffer chronic pain, and doctors found a lesion on his brain.

Cox said he has spent more than $400,000 on medical bills as a result, according to the Associated Press.

The report added that Cox's lawyer Benedict Morelli said his client had not been warned that the stunt could be risky and would not have taken part had he known.

This is a trick David has done over 3,000 times. Little did the audience know that the chosen people were led to a passageway that will take them to the back.

MGM Grand Hotel attorney Jerry Popovich said on Tuesday that the illusion is no longer used to close the show. One of the magician's employees was hospitalized for an injury that occurred during an illusion in which Copperfield appears to walk through the blades of a spinning fan, only to turn to smoke.
