Drug testing could be required for some food stamp recipients

Drug testing could be required for some food stamp recipients

The Trump administration is considering a plan that would allow states to require certain food stamp recipients to undergo drug testing, handing a win to conservatives who've long sought ways to curb safety net program.

The AP report suggests this may change very soon, citing an anonymous administration official with knowledge of the plan.

It would target people who are able-bodied, childless and people searching for specialized jobs such as working with heavy machinery.

"Are people losing their food assistance if they don't take the test, and in that case, is that a condition of eligibility, which the states aren't allowed to impose?" Estimates pin the number of those affected at around 5 percent of participants in the program. But the news comes as part of a much broader push to limit federal food assistance more generally. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Trump issued an executive order Tuesday night, privately and with no fanfare, with the intention of imposing "common sense reforms" to SNAP, Medicaid, federal housing programs, and other welfare programs.

In sampling opinions around uptown, NBC Charlotte spoke with Josh Williams who said he has already been booted out of the food stamp program. According to USDA, over 16 million "able-bodied adults", with or without children, enrolled in SNAP in 2016.

States Could Drug Test People on Food Stamps Under Rumored Trump Administration Policy

Scott Walker speaks in Madison, Wis., on January 30.

"Most employers require drug tests, and you pay your taxes which funds these benefits, so why not make them take drug tests to receive benefits that people paying benefits have to go through?" another resident said. In March, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice signed a bill that requires ABAWDs to work or volunteer at least 20 hours a week to receive benefits. "It's just a smear to create an impression that will make it more likely that they'll be able to cut the program".

It is unclear when, or if USDA will announce the drug testing policy. Drug testing for cash welfare, meanwhile, has been in place since Clinton's welfare reform. "The idea that they're playing politics with a food and nutrition program, really is a new low".

We'll keep updating this story as it progresses.
