Dubai to launch digital vehicle number plates

It is claimed they could also change to display a special alert or some other form of warning if they're stolen.

Head of the Vehicle Licensing Department at Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Sultan Abdullah al-Marzouqi said at the Future Cities Show in Dubai on Monday that "The digital plate will also allow vehicles to connect with each other - that's why it's "Tag to Connect" - meaning, motorists can exchange information on traffic condition or if there is an accident on the road".

Vehicle licence plates are going digital in Dubai as drivers are set to test them next month.

Drivers in Dubai may soon be using digital number plates under new plans.

Vehicles will be fitted with smart plates with digital screens, Global Positioning System and transmitters and the new plates will be able to inform emergency services if a driver meets an accident, the BBC reported.

Dubai is determined to become a global leader in technology and is implementing a range of trials to test emerging technologies in everyday use.

The number plates not only enable police or ambulance to find the vehicle if there has been any sort of accident, the plates can also monitor traffic conditions and communicate that to other drivers.

While it is not clear whether or not the smart plates in Dubai will be exploited, license plate databases have always been a surveillance tool used by law enforcement in the United States, including by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Plate reading and tracking is something old for the law enforcement agencies, these smart plates could take the whole thing to a completely new level.
