Gov. Brown will deploy National Guard, but not for immigration enforcement

Last week Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced that President Trump would send National Guard troops to the USA southern border.

National Guard troops fall under the command of state governors, and in a letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Brown said those from California will support operations against drug traffickers, gun runners and smuggling gangs. "This will not be a mission to build a new wall".

Trump wants up to 4,000 troops sent to the border to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking and has already won commitments for about 1,600 from the Republican governors of the other states that border Mexico - Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

It's now clear that Brown used that time to negotiate specific conditions under which the California National Guard will deploy.

Brown's office said the deployment will happen pending review and approval by the federal government. He said the troops were needed because of "lawlessness that continues at our southern border", and he wanted increased security while he continues his push to build a wall along the entire border. "The California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws". The Daredevils, who had also lost their first game of the season, were set 71 to win from six overs after a lengthy delay. The South African player (17 off 7 balls) hit a four and a six off the next two balls but of course, it wasn't enough.

California's "sanctuary" policies limiting cooperation with USA immigration agents have been a target for Trump's ire, and in his most recent weekly address he called the state "a border-free zone where thousands of criminal aliens can roam free".

As California and the federal government have sparred over immigration policy, Brown has faced political pressure in the Golden State to deny Trump's request.

On Saturday, five planners from the National Guard arrived in the Laredo border patrol sector, where they heard requests and operational input from Burwell and his staff.

California National Guard troops patrol a neighborhood burned by wildfires in 2017. He said that immigrant apprehension at the border was down to the lowest they have been in the last 50 years. "That's why the state and the Guard have long supported this important work and agreed to similar targeted assistance in 2006 under President Bush and in 2010 under President Obama".
