Hanna Dickenson: Fake Cancer Scam Lands Woman in Jail

Hanna Dickenson: Fake Cancer Scam Lands Woman in Jail

Reflecting on this, you can probably sympathise why Hanna Dickenson's parents rallied around their cancer-stricken daughter, raising thousands of dollars from friends, family and neighbours to cover the cost of life-saving medical treatment overseas. The money her parents provided for her treatment was used by Dickenson to party with friends, abuse alcohol and drugs and go on overseas holidays.

Photographs Dickenson posted to her Facebook page led one of the scam's donors to voice suspicions to the police that things weren't on the up-and-up.

"There's been a request for financial assistance in circumstances where it had been purported that Ms Dickenson had very few options left", Mr Starvaggi said.

Court documents reveal Dickenson lied to doctors about having partaken in clinical trials for cancer treatment and having received care at the prestigious Peter McCallum Institute in Melbourne, and the Epworth Hospital as well.

"People's conscious desire to assist has been touched. that's the social trust".

In sentencing, magistrate David Starvaggi said Dickenson had "engaged in conduct that tears at the very heartstrings of human nature".

Dickenson's attorney, Beverley Lindsay, had earlier urged the magistrate to not send her client to jail.

Bootleg alcohol kills dozens in weeks
Family members move the body of a victim who died from drinking poisonous bootleg liquor at a hospital in Cicalengka, West Java. They also found other ingredients such as soft drinks, syrup, and energy drinks in the liquor samples as well.

She also compared the deception to one involving an Australian celebrity blogger, Belle Gibson, who was fined A$410,000 past year after falsely claiming to have beaten brain cancer.

They exclusively told A Current Affair Hanna would visit their home and spend time with their children, sometimes complaining of her ill health while she was there.

Ms Lindsay argued that her client's offending was less severe than Gibson's.

But the magistrate said he could not think of a "worse case ... needing both specific deterrence and general deterrence".

The suspect, identified by police as 33-year-old Kevin Mann, denied hitting the woman but said he was chasing her to get her phone, which he said belonged to him.

The court heard she would lose her job as a property manager for Little Real Estate in Melbourne.
