Kathua: Crisis in BJP-PDP coalition averted after 2 ministers resign

Two state ministers from Modi's BJP - Choudhary Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga - resigned after attending a controversial rally by local Hindu groups held in defence of the accused.

"As a Home Minister, Mufti has failed in tracing the missing 8-year-old girl for a week", he said and added that the BJP State President Sat Sharma, who sent both the ministers to the spot to pacify the protestors should also resign for making them scapegoat.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has lauded the country's political leadership, judiciary, media and the civil society for standing with the J&K Government to ensure justice in the Kathua rape and murder case, saying that it will go a long way in restoring the people's confidence in the institutions.

On January 17, an eight-year-old girl was allegedly abducted, drugged, raped, tortured and killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.

Shashi Singh is accused of luring the girl and taking her to accused MLA.

Within hours of taking over the investigation, the CBI brought Sengar, who had remained untouched by the state police, to its office in Lucknow, where he was questioned for almost 16 hours before being taken into custody on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Lal Singh also sought a CBI probe and said what is wrong with it.

He said the resignation letters were now being forwarded to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Madhav said the two ministers stepped down because of the perception about them. "And if PDP and BJP continue to resolve their issues like this, I see there is no substitute to this alliance".

When asked how these remarks amount to defusing communal tension, Kaul first maintained a strategic pause, then said, "I don't know what you are trying to make me say. Jammu lawyers have been on strike for the last 12 days demanding, besides other things, a CBI probe in this case".

Meanwhile, while reacting to the demand that the CBI should be asked to take up the case, Akhter said that the decision not to involve it (CBI) was taken because the family of the victim was against it. "They are contending that the workers were not happy with them", sources said.

The next day, her father, who had been in police custody, died from injuries he sustained in an alleged beating.

The two ministers had supported the demand for a CBI enquiry into the gang rape and murder of the Bekarwal girl.
