Kenya: Three IEBC Commissioners Resign After Fallout With Chebukati

In a joint press briefing at a Nairobi hotel on Monday morning, IEBC Vice Chair Consolata Nkatha Maina, Commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat said that external interference has encroached the commission's independence under Chebukati's leadership.

Their resignation comes three days after the High Court has declined to issue orders to reinstate IEBC Ezra Chiloba who was sent on a three months compulsory leave a week ago.

It ruled that commission officials had announced results before being able to verify them.

The latest resignation of three IEBC commissioners over alleged poor leadership of Chairman Wafula Chebukati did not come as a coincidence, a source privy to IEBC intrigues has revealed.

The commissioners said they made a decision to quit because they no longer had faith in IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati's leadership.

"For far too long and many times, the commission chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and gives direction when needed".

And a source, who enjoys warm relationship with DP Ruto, says the resignation emanated from the country's second in command because he was not "comfortable" with Chiloba's suspension.

"My call for IEBC Commissioners to resign is informed by recent wrangles linked to the fight for tenders plus control and manipulation of IEBC staff", Murkomen said on Twitter.

Experts said the effect of the latest move will destabilize the commission at a time it is preparing to conduct electoral boundaries review for the 2022 election, whereas Chiloba's absence will make it hard or impossible for the secretariat to operate because the CEO by law makes the day-to-day decisions which no other commissioner can. "Given this deteriorating confidence in the chair, we find our position as commissioners under his leadership no longer tenable" they stated.

"Therefore the events related to the purported vote have already shaken our already feeble confidence in the chair".
