Macron says he 'convinced' Trump to stay in Syria ahead of strikes

When Emmanuel Macron called Vladimir Putin on Friday, the day before launching his first major military operation with strikes on Syria, the French president knew the credibility of his foreign policy was at stake.

He said the military operation in Syria was legitimate and within the worldwide community framework, and was not a declaration of war.

"We have not declared war on the regime of Bashar Al Assad", the 40-year-old centrist said in a combative TV interview.

American objectives in Syria have not altered, the White House said Sunday, reiterating that President Donald Trump wants United States troops home "as quickly as possible". "We convinced him that it was necessary to stay".

While this operation was not sanctioned by the United Nations, Syria was supposed to destroy its chemical weapons arsenal under a 2013 UN resolution, he said.

Despite soaring tensions with Russia, Macron stressed the need to "talk to everyone" in pursuing a Syrian settlement, saying his plans to visit Moscow in May remain unchanged.

Two weeks ago, Trump has expressed a strong desire to pull American troops out of Syria, but the president appears to be reconsidering in the wake of a coalition strike on the Syrian regime's chemical warfare infrastructure in the aftermath of a deadly chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus.

Trump calls Comey 'untruthful slime ball' as book details released
His chat on Sunday saw Comey brand Trump "morally unfit to be president" and accuse him of repeated lying. He copped a plea and is now cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller , who has bigger fish to fry.

Also on Saturday, the French Foreign Ministry released a seven-page long assessment of the alleged chemical attack in Syria's Douma on April 7, which concluded that there was no other plausible explanation than a chemical attack coordinated by the Syrian military.

Obama had to backtrack in the face of congressional opposition, signaling USA fatigue in the Middle East and empowering Russia, Western military experts said at the time. The NATO alliance gave its full backing; NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels that the attack was about ensuring that chemical weapons can not be used with impunity. "They have not used chlorine themselves but they have methodically built the global community's inability to act through diplomatic channels to stop the use of chemical weapons", he said of Russian Federation.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", he said.

On Friday, Trump said that the United States is "prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents". "This is not about intervening in a civil war".

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the United States and its French and British allies a "military crime" and "act of aggression".

"The U.S. mission has not changed - the President has been clear that he wants U.S. forces to come home as quickly as possible", press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.
