Michigan Man Wins Million Mega Jackpot

The victor of last month's $553 million Mega Millions jackpot stepped forward Friday to claim his prize in New Jersey.

The winning ticket was sold at the Lukoil South gas station on Route 23 in Riverdale on March 30.

It was just the fourth time the jackpot has surpassed the $500 million mark, lottery officials have said. "Family, friends, people in need", he said, NorthJersey.com reported.

Richard Wahl was introduced Friday during a news conference at lottery headquarters.

That drawing was two weeks ago.

The owner of the store, Ameer Krass, said he had been able to identify Wahl by reviewing surveillance footage. He checked the numbers around midnight and initially thought he had won only $1 million until he realized he had the Mega Ball along with the other numbers.

Wahl said he recently moved to New Jersey for a job.

New Jersey Lottery held a news conference to announce the victor.

The jackpot was the biggest ever in New Jersey.

New Jersey's only other appearance on the top-10 Mega Millions winnings list was in 2007 when the state shared a $390 million jackpot with Georgia, according to the Mega Millions website.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states and Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
