Natalie Portman cancels attending Israeli award ceremony

The foundation quoted Portman's rep as saying that "recent events in Israel have been extremely distressing" to the actress, and that "she can not in good conscience move forward with the ceremony".

While the foundation did not specify Portman's reasoning, the announcement comes less than a week after the European Union called for an investigation into the Israeli military's use of live ammunion in an attack along the Gaza border that left dozens of Palestinians dead and hundreds wounded.

Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev arrives for the weekly cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem, March 11, 2018.

"I was sorry to hear that Natalie Portman has fallen like ripe fruit to the hands of BDS supporters", Regev said in a statement given to Israeli journalists.

Portman, who was born in Jerusalem and has dual Israeli-American citizenship, was announced as the victor of the award in November.

Of course Portman was born in Israel but grew up in the United States.

Meanwhile, world No. 4 Zverev needed two hours and three minutes to overcome his compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Second seed Marin Cilic safely negotiated a potentially-tricky opener against Fernando Verdasco, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

"We fear that Ms. Portman's decision will cause our philanthropic initiative to be politicized".

Natalie Portman has cancelled her upcoming trip to Israel. "She's totally one of us, identifies with her Jewishness and Israeliness".

"She's speaking for many in US Jewry, especially the young generation", Azaria wrote on Twitter. "This is a community that was always a significant anchor for the State of Israel and the price of losing it is likely to be too high". "We are disappointed that this year we will not be able to fulfill this mission in full".

The actor went on to say that "she can not in good conscience move forward with the ceremony".

Portman was set to receive the prize, which organizers dub as the "Jewish Nobel Prize", in Israel this June.

The Genesis base said it was "very saddened" by Portman's determination. It is not clear whether Portman will still receive the prize money, which the actor said would go to programs that focus on advancing women's equality.

The dual US-Israeli citizen, who in the past has been a proponent of Israel, snubbed the prestigious ceremony and a prize of $2 million given annually to Jewish people in recognition of excellence in their fields. In 2015, she directed "Tale of Love and Darkness", a Hebrew-language film made in Israel and based on the novel by an Israeli writer Amos Oz.
