Prominent gay rights' attorney dead after apparent self-immolation, police say

High-profile USA gay rights lawyer and environmental advocate David Buckel, 60, has self-immolated in a public park in a grisly protest against humanity's destruction of the planet.

The body of David S. Buckel, 60, was found near Prospect Park's baseball fields about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday after a passerby reported a severely burned individual, the New York Police Department said.

According to the New York Daily News, Buckel left a handwritten note at the scene, which said he'd self-immolated with fossil fuel in a protest against the environment's destruction.

Buckel had been the lead lawyer in the case of Brandon Teena, a transgender teen who police were found to have failed to protect after he was brutally raped and later, murdered in Nebraska. Hilary Swank won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Teena in the 1999 movie 'Boys Don't Cry'.

The prominent lawyer also worked as a Marriage Project Director and Senior Counsel at Lambda Legal, which has long fought for LGBT rights.

"Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather", Buckel wrote the Times in an email. He left a note in a nearby shopping cart which he also emailed to several news outlets including the New York Times, the paper reported.

"My early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves", Buckel wrote.

"This is a tremendous loss for our Lambda Legal family, but also for the entire movement for social justice", she said in a statement.

Buckel's work included cases for Lambda Legal, the country's largest and oldest LGBTQ legal organisation. "Honorable goal in life invites honorable objective in death", he wrote, according to his note.

He represented Brandon Teena's mother in a lawsuit against the New England sheriff which notified Teena's rapists that he had pressed charges and did nothing to protect him from being killed.

"Here is a hope that giving a life might bring some attention to the need for expanded actions, and help others give a voice to our home, and Earth is heard".

He also fought for the right of gay high-school students in Salt Lake City to organize a club, and argued against discrimination in the Boy Scoutss of America and the military. "We were a little freaked out", the jogger told the Daily News.
