Rolls-Royce to increase inspections of Trent 1000 engines

Rolls-Royce to increase inspections of Trent 1000 engines

The inspections affect Trent 1000s with the Package C compressor, and the engine manufacturer says 380 such engines are in service. The news comes after the company recently warned that the cost for fixing the issues with its Trent 1000 and Trent 900 engines would broadly double from the total cash cost in 2017 of £170 million and reach a peak this year.

One of the biggest names in British manufacturing, Rolls-Royce is in the midst of a restructuring by CEO Warren East but its turnaround has been hampered by problems with some turbine blades that have worn out more quickly than expected. Its civil aerospace business is engaged in the development, manufacture, marketing and sales of commercial aero engines and aftermarket services.

It said on Friday that more regular inspections are required and would lead "to higher than previously guided cash costs being incurred during 2018".

Nevertheless, Rolls confirmed its free-cash-flow guidance for the year at around £450 million.

This is a known issue and we will continue to work with Rolls-Royce, our customers and the regulators to fully resolve it. Boeing is deploying support teams to mitigate service disruption.

Not all Dreamliners are powered by Rolls-Royce engines and those using General Electric GEnx engines are also unaffected.

"Our team of technical experts and service engineers is working around the clock to ensure we return them to full service as soon as possible", he said.

Virgin Atlantic said it had up to four 787s grounded at any one time while it organised replacement engines from Rolls.

The warning by Rolls-Royce comes ahead of anticipated announcements by U.S. and European aviation regulators, who are expected to issue guidance to airlines as soon as Friday.

CEO East said Rolls was working with Boeing and airlines to minimise the disruption. Virgin has also leased three Airbus A330-200s to help cover its flying programme. If a durability issue is found, the blade will be replaced.

Air New Zealand is one of the airlines affected by the problem, with nine of the Package C engines, said it expected there would be some impact on its global schedule as a result of the additional checks.

Scoot, a budget carrier owned by Singapore Airlines, said it expected some impact on operations.

The airline said the directive by Rolls-Royce and European safety agency EASA reduced the check frequency from 2000 take-off and landing cycles to 300.
