Russia: Chemical inspectors head to attack site

Inspectors at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are delaying their visit to sites near Damascus to investigate suspected chemical weapons use by the Syrian government because an advance security team came under fire.

Pentagon officials say there has been no indication the Syrian military is prepared to launch another chemical weapons attack following last Saturday's missile strikes by the United States, France and Britain, but Washington and its allies "remain vigilant".

Syrian state media says government forces have retaken control of a town in northeast Damascus after rebels departed to north Syria.

The security team entered Douma earlier to determine whether the experts can deploy there Wednesday, Jaafari told the Security Council on Tuesday.

The statement was referring to airstrikes by the US, UK and France on three sites in Syria believed to have been linked to the country's chemical weapons programme.

"On arrival at site one, a large crowd gathered and the advice provided by the UNDSS was that the reconnaissance team should withdraw", he told a meeting at the watchdog's headquarters in remarks it later released.

The United States earlier this year accused Russian Federation of helping Pyongyang evade some global sanctions by supplying fuel to the isolated country.

"We had the moral obligations, we had promised not to do it some 10 years ago, I think, upon the request of our known partners", he said according to RIA.

Russia's military says a Syrian security employee was wounded in an attack on a United Nations team as it was on a security mission to the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack just outside Damascus.

Defence says schedules show Cosby wasn't around

CNN obtained an email distributed by the White House on Saturday morning, April 14, outlining the administration's response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria.

At the second location, "there was an explosion followed by small-arms fire directed at (the) UNDSS team and the Russian military police", said the report, adding that the team had returned safely to Damascus.

There were no injuries and the United Nations team returned to Damascus, but the watchdog had to postpone its visit.

The U.S. -led intervention has threatened to escalate confrontation between the West and Assad's backer Russian Federation, although it has had no impact on the fighting on the ground, in which pro-government forces have pressed on with a campaign to crush the rebellion.

The statement said the United States also had concerns about the situations in Ukraine, where Russian Federation backs separatists, and in Syria, where Moscow's military support has tipped the balance in favor of the Damascus government in a seven-year-old civil war.

The Civil Defence no longer has a presence in Douma after being evacuated to rebel-held areas of northern Syria when the government took over the town.

OPCW chief Ahmet Uzumcu said the incident highlighted "the highly volatile environment" in which the fact-finding team had to work.

"You can actually do what we call it in the military business as the decontamination process, which is to remove all the evidence on the ground by using other chemicals to neutralise the chemicals on the ground".
